A “name server” may sound too complex a term and may give an outlook that it is a term defined for some intricate process. However, name servers are rather simple yet integral part of the web hosts. In layman terms, they keep the websites visible on the internet. Each and every website has a particular IP address. It is unique and so it helps the PC in distinguishing one website from another. In order, to make it easy for the user domain names are used by the website which is usually related to the content of the website. Hence, it is relatively easier for the user to remember them and use them. Name servers are a part of the domain system and link the IP addresses with the domain name. For instance, when a web user types a domain name or according to him/her the website name on the browser. Then the name servers use the domain name and provide the IP address of that particular domain to the browser. The browser then uses it to get to the website page. The role of the name server as described above is in the background. Without them, the users would have to memorize or note down the IP addresses. The IP addresses are a numeric string of number for all websites and they vary. Hence, it is difficult to memorize, note down and then type each time a user wants to access a website.

Name servers are a PC equipment or programming server that makes use of network service to provide reactions or one can say answers to questions against a directory service. It interprets a humanly meaningful, content based identifier to an internal system. Due to the protocol request, the server performs this task. A name server is a particular server on the web that has a great deal of expertise and deals with inquiries or questions from the local PC, about the location of the domain rather than the IP addresses. They are a pivotal part of the Domain Name system(DNS).

There are three main types of name servers. Root servers, authoritative servers, and resolvers. Although, the primary function of each type is the same. However, they all fulfill somewhat different purposes. The name servers usually have to be updated after a given time period. This can be done easily by contacting the registrar of the domain and modifying according to one’s needs.
